  1. This two-record set of The History of British Rock was released in the mids as a way, I suppose, of summing up the previous inexscapcomdamarsireconcibumbmor.coinfo was distributed by Sire Records, which meant that some major acts would not be included due to licensing. As such, notable artists like The Who and The Rolling Stones are not found here, and The Beatles are only represented on one of their early, Decca.

Sep 07,  · If you get the three main sets, you won't need any of the repackages. The first was "The History Of British Rock", then came "The History Of British Rock, volume 2", then "The Roots Of British Rock". A number of the tracks are from the original mono tapes, but some have been rechanneled. Volume 1 has a rare stereo mix of "Pictures Of Matchstick.
  5. In when I turned 20, I purchased "History of British Rock," due that they have The Honeycombs' hit song on this compilation. Alas, this collection brought memories back to me in the same manner as Marcel Proust's character taking a bite of the French cookie.
  6. The British girl group scene wasn't nearly as vital as the American one, but there were still quite a few fun recordings produced in the style during the mid-'60s. This compilation is a good overview of lesser-known highlights of a sub-genre that is nearly unknown in the U.S.

At first glance, this entry in K-Tel's Ultimate History of Rock & Roll Collection looks like a very good introduction to the early-'60s girl group sound. The disc's lineup is a very solid one with many of the big-name groups and singers accounted for, including Lesley Gore, Barbara Lewis, the Chiffons, the Chantels, the Shirelles, and the Dixie Cups.
